The Rotary Club of Shillong completed its 60th year on 24th May 2017, thereby achieving a milestone which only a handful of service organisations in this town have achieved. The Club, which was presented with its Charter by Rotary International on that day has over the years made significant efforts to bring some positive changes in the lives of people living in and around Shillong, especially the economically challenged section of the society.
Established in 1957, Rotary Club of Shillong is easily one of the best known voluntary service organizations of Meghalaya. The Club has made sustained efforts to identify itself with the needs and expectations of the society and has been involved in may initiatives, big as well as small, to address the needs of the community.
The first ever community service activity immediately on formation of the club was to donate water pump to Pomlum village. In 1993, the club visited this village again and donated desks, benches, blackboards water filters etc. to Pomlum High School. In order to describe the activities of the club in past 60 years, it would be better to follow the four avenues of services as prescribed by Rotary International. They are: Club Service, Vocational Services, International Service and Community Service.
